ALBAWABA - A Zambian journalist shared the first footage of Egyptians who were caught in Zambia on board an Egyptian plane that carried millions of dollars, fake gold guns and ammunition.
Twelve people were arrested on board the Egyptian plane; six of them were Egyptian citizens along with Zambian detainees as well as Dutch national and a Spanish national were also among those arrested in the raid, Zambian officials confirmed.
Zambian Drug Enforcement Commission revealed that the Egyptian seized jet was carrying nearly $5.7 million in U.S. currency, 602 bars of fake gold, five pistols and 126 rounds of ammunition. The fake gold was detected to contain copper and zinc only.
Nason Banda, director general of the country’s Drug Enforcement Commission said earlier: "This has been a clear case of scamming, gold scamming."
Despite that, the Zambian authorities refused to identify Egyptians arrested on the plane since the incident took place in mid-August, a Zambian journalist shared the first footage and images of Egyptian detainees while on their way to court.
According to BBC, Egyptians and Zambians arrested on the plane have been charged with smuggling and corrupt practices. The Zambian nationals are likely to also "face espionage charges."
Egypt's Middle East News Agency revealed the latest development in the case saying that the Zambian Drug Enforcement Commission arrested five Egyptians and Six Zambians, among them a high-ranking police officer in the plane case and formally accused them of espionage during court on Monday.
