Hundreds of thousands of Iranians rallied in the streets of Tehran to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the country’s Islamic Revolution.
Some of the protesters have marked this day by burning U.S. flags. However, other poeople held photos of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Shi’ite religious leader.
On February 11, 1979, the Iranian army announced its neutrality in the dispute between the people and monarchy and thus Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and his family were forced to leave the country.
