Monther Abu Amara’s stunning second-half equaliser ensured Jordan and Vietnam shared a 1-1 draw in Group C of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 qualifiers on Tuesday as the West Asians secured top spot.

The visitors came out the blocks strongly and Nguyen Cong Phuong opened the scoring midway through the first half, but Abu Amara rifled home the equaliser with 20 minutes remaining.

Jordan continued to apply heavy pressure in search of the winner but Vietnam held out as the sides ended the third round of qualifying undefeated with the Jordanians finishing on top of the standings, two points ahead of the Vietnamese.

With both teams having already guaranteed their progression to the continental championship, there was only top spot to play for at King Abdullah II Stadium.

It was Vietnam – who needed victory to leapfrog the Jordanians – that started the stronger and took a deserved lead in the 24th minute when Cong Phuong finished off a fine flowing move from just outside the six-yard box.

The West Asians came out in search of an equaliser after the interval and began to dominate proceedings, with Ahmad Saleh powering just over as the hour approached.

Substitute Musab Al Laham was next to threaten the Vietnam goal when his effort from eight yards was tipped over by goalkeeper Dang Van Lam as the hosts cranked up the pressure.

But the game was now opening up and the Southeast Asians had a chance of their own a minute later, only for Nguyen Quang Hai to shoot directly at goalkeeper Ahmad Nawas.

The hosts then levelled the scores in the 71st minute when Abu Amara unleashed a blistering effort from distance that gave Van Lam in the Vietnam goal absolutely no chance to set up a thrilling finale.

Abu Amara could have added a second with 12 minutes remaining but this time was denied by Van Lam, who stood tall as the forward closed in.

Then, as the clock ticked down further, Vam Lam produced an incredible save from Al Laham’s downward header from the edge of the six-yard box as the game ended in parity.
