AFC president considers Platini a unique candidate

The chief of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Thursday praised Michel Platini as a "unique candidate" who would bring stability to FIFA.

"We have of course noted Michel Platini's decision to stand, and he is certainly a unique candidate who would bring stability and a smooth transition to normality for FIFA in this difficult situation," said AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa.

UEFA president Platini on Wednesday confirmed his intention to run for the FIFA presidency as successor to Joseph Blatter.

The AFC chief noted the difficult position scandal-hit FIFA is currently in and said, "In order to stabilize it needs leadership, experience and new ideas, but above all it needs football to be placed at its heart.

"Hopefully a new president can bring many of these things, which is why it is so important for Asia to remain as united as possible behind the single-best candidate for football, regardless of where they are from."

But Al Khalifa also said that the top FIFA job is only one part of the global football governing body, "which is why it is so important to get the reforms right as well."

The next FIFA president is to be elected at an extraordinary congress in Zurich on February 26, 2016. Candidates must declare their intention to standby October 26 this year.
