Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid: Spanish Super Cup 2nd leg preview

Published August 28th, 2013 - 02:11 GMT

In the second match of the season at Camp Nou, Barcelona and Gerardo “Tata” Martino will have the chance today to win their first silverware of the season. The Blaugrana face off Atletico Madrid for the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup.

Both squads come to the Camp Nou after victories in La Liga during the weekend. Barca had a 1-0 against Malaga while playing at La Rosaleda Stadium. And Atletico got a 5-0 shootout versus Rayo Vallecano at Vicente Calderon.

Los Colchoneros will visit Barca with all players available to manager Diego Pablo Simeone. But one change from in the team from the first leg could be Raul Garcia starting in the lineup for Koke in the midfield.

As for the hosts this Wednesday Ibrahim Afellay (thigh), Isaac Cuenca (knee), Carles Puyol (knee) are going to continue out of the team. However, there is also good news for the Blaugrana.

Lionel Messi--the all-time top scorer in the Supercopa with 10 goals-- as well as Adriano were back training yesterday and have received the all-clear approval by the medical staff. So they should be available for Martino.

At their first battle last week, Atletico came out with the opening goal early in the first half with David Villa, as Los Colchoneros pressured the backline men from Barca for the entire first 15 minutes. Yet Barca were able to find an equalizer in the second half after Neymar Jr. entered to net a header and his first goal for the club finishing the match as a draw.

Because of the away goal, Barca will have the advantage of a scoreless draw to conquer their 11th Supercopa de España. The match up marks Villa’s first appearance at Camp Nou as the enemy since 2010, also the Blaugrana’s fifth consecutive appearance in the tournament. As for Los Colchoneros, they have only won the Supercopa in the 1984-85 season.

The last time both clubs clashed in the Super Cup, Barca won with an aggregated score of 4-3 back in 1999.

Prediction: 2-1 to Barcelona (Diego Costa for Atletico in the first half; Messi and Neymar in the second half for Barca)
