Basel v Liverpool: Predicted lineups

Published October 1st, 2014 - 12:51 GMT

FC Basel (0-0-1) were crushed in the opening match of their UEFA Champions League return by Real Madrid, but they will hope that a Liverpool side that has seen a slow start to their campaign could stumble in Switzerland.

Ivan Ivanov and Marcelo Diaz are the two absentees for the Swiss side with no other injury worries.

Liverpool (1-0-0) managed a late and dramatic win over Bulgarian side Ludogorets at Anfield on the opening day of the group stages, but Basel could be much more frustrating. It is truly time to see what Brendan Rodgers' side is made of in Europe with this first away test that is a must win if they have dreams of advancing.

Joe Allen, Emre Can, Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan are all ruled out, while Daniel Sturridge is believed set for a start on the bench. There is no word as to whether Mamadou Sakho will travel after his weekend walkout over the Merseyside Derby.

Projected Lineups

Basel XI: Vaclik: Xhaka, Schar, Suchy, Safari; Die, Frei, Zuffi; Gonzalez, Streller, Gashi.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet: Manquillo, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno; Gerrard, Henderson; Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling; Balotelli.
