AC Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi is expecting Stephan El Shaarawy to build upon his excellent display in the recent friendly with Real Madrid and become a more consistent player.

The 22-year-old netted twice in the Rossoneri's 4-2 victory over the reigning European champions last week but has just one goal to his name from 12 outings in Serie A this season.

Now his coach has called upon him to put his previous injury problems behind him and look to produce such displays on a regular basis at San Siro.

"The performance from Stephan against Real Madrid has to become the norm," Inzaghi said in a press conference.

"I knew I had to be patient with him because he was coming back from a long injury and he’s very young. I have a lot of confidence in him."

The Rossoneri announced the signing of Alessio Cerci on a loan deal from Atletico Madrid on Monday, but Inzaghi suggested that people shouldn't expect to see much else from his side in the transfer window.

"My priority as of the summer was Alessio Cerci and he’s now arrived. Cerci has unique characteristics, he has a big desire to show what he can do, he’s an international player," he said.

"It’s now down to me to understand the best moment to play him. With him we can also often change the formation.

"I am very happy with the players that I have, and just like the president [Silvio Berlusconi], I wouldn’t exchange any of my players for any other."

The reason being that the 41-year-old coach believes his team are already heading in the right direction and is hoping for an extended run in the Coppa Italia.

"When you see the side play as they have done in the last matches with Napoli and Roma, it’s very pleasing and it leaves me optimistic," Inzaghi added.

"We are on the right path. Milan has to get back to being a leader once again, the words of the president are always very encouraging.

"The Coppa Italia has to be our Champions League this year, it would be wonderful to lead these players and to take the fans to a final.

"We have to give our all in both Serie A and the Italian Cup to go as far as possible."

Milan welcome Sassuolo to the San Siro on Tuesday afternoon for their first Serie A game of 2015, and the Neroverdi will return for a cup game seven days later.
