The extraordinary congress to elect a new FIFA president is to take place in Zurich on February 26, 2016, the executive committee of the world football governing body decided at a meeting on Monday.

Current president Joseph Blatter won a fifth term at the ordinary FIFA congress on May 29 but just four days later promised to lay down his mandate amid the latest scandals to hit the world football governing body.

FIFA is facing corruption probes by investigators in the United States and Switzerland, where the organization is based. Long-term sponsors such as Coca-Cola and McDonald's are also increasing the pressure on the body to clean up its image.

The 79-year-old Blatter was known to have favoured a later date for the extraordinary congress to allow him to pursue his own reforms of the organization. His European critics, led by German Football Federation president Wolfgang Niersbach, were pushing for the congress to take place this year.

Before the executive committee meeting took place, dpa learned UEFA president Michel Platini has been asked to stand for president by several football federations.

Various countries from the European, Asian, South American and North and Central American confederations are encouraging Platini to put his name forward as a potential successor to Blatter.

However, the 60-year-old Frenchman has not yet declared his intention to stand having passed on the chance to run in the previous FIFA election in May.
