There have been few positives since the turn of the year for Manchester United. A run of just three wins and numerous defeats has put the club on the brink of a disastrous season – as early as in the first week of March. Still, there is a lot of promise with the club being linked with top talent from across the world. They have already brought in Juan Mata for a club record fee and there is likely to be several arrivals in the summer.

Further, United’s lure in the transfer market does not appear to have diminished after highly talented Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho stated that he is happy to hear of the interest from United and that he would welcome a move to Old Trafford. According to Metro, he said:

“It’s nice being praised and to know there are some big clubs interested in me.

“[My future could be with] Manchester United or Real Madrid. It’s just nice to have a great European club after me, but at the moment I’m just totally focused on Sporting and doing my best until the end of the season. At the end of the campaign, we will see what happens.”

United are not the only club – as expected – to register an interest in the 21-year-old. Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester City have also shown their interest in the player. He is a defensive midfielder, who also has the occasional goal within him. Sporting have been able to maintain a challenge for the title, in league that has been dominated by two clubs – FC Porto and Benfica, this season and Carvalho has played a major part in it.

He has been an ever present for Sporting CP. The real test for him, though, is likely to come next season if Sporting qualify for the Champions League next season.

Until then, he can bask in the interest from giants like United and Real Madrid.

The defeat against Olympiakos highlighted the need for a midfield enforcer, who was also capable of starting attacks. Carvalho could be the perfect answer for United’s woes in midfield.
