ALBAWABA – Lenovo has unveiled an interesting looking laptop with a full transparent display, world's first with Micro-LED technology during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, after a number of companies, most notably Samsung, previewed transparent TVs and screen technologies in CES 2024, sparking conversations on potential use cases.
The unusual see-through laptop, dubbed “Project Crystal,” is considered a proof-of-concept design that was commissioned by the ThinkPad division, a way for Lenovo to display where the company stands technologically, exploration of MicroLED technology and to showcase their innovative talents, rather than a consumer product expected to hit store shelves anytime soon.
The device features a thin 17.3inch Micro-LED borderless screen, sandwiched between two Gorilla glass sheets with sharp corner edges and peak brightness of 3,000 nits, as well as a digital glass keyboard that’s illuminated, giving the device a futuristic Cyberpunk look, which can switch to a drawing pad with a stylus.
The transparent display has raised questions, as any passing person would be able to see the screen content, Lenovo’s response to this problem according to The Wired, is that they are exploring different solutions like a physical blind on the back and a version with opaque privacy layer which the user can enable anytime, however it was not ready before the event, thus not shown.
Project Crystal, like most recently announced devices is equipped with a handful of Artificial Intelligence features, one where with a camera that is strategically placed behind the screen hinge, pointing towards the back of the device, a user can scan different kind of objects to get more information about it online.
