As Daesh militants ravage the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, reports emerged Wednesday of a new battlefront opening up for the group, in the southern city of Daraa.
The cradle of the revolution in 2011, the provincial city has long been a stronghold of Free Syrian Army rebels and fighters from al-Qaeda's Nusra Front. Opposition groups have been locked into fierce clashes with pro-government forces there for months.
But the Southern Front battlefield may soon have a new element. According to Arabic news site Al Kawan, Daesh is closing in on the rebel-held area after locking horns with Nusra fighters this week. Now militants are trying to push into Sweida, a city within Daraa province. If they succeed, the group's next step is the Jordanian border.
Israeli military intelligence news service Debka shared this image on Twitter Thursday, while other Arabic media corroborated Al Kawan's report.
Meanwhile, the Hashemite Kingdom says it's equipped to fend off potential threats along its borders with Iraq and Syria, both of which the militant group has made advancements toward.
