ALBAWABA - Following yet another provocative act of Quran burning by anti-Islam refugee Salwan Momika in Malmo, Swedish police stated that violent clashes have erupted in the country's third-largest city, with at least three demonstrators detained.

Malmo police said they were attacked with rocks and dozens of cars were set on fire, including one in an underground garage, and described the events as "a violent riot" that erupted Sunday and continued overnight.

Momika set fire to a Quran on Varnhemstorget, Malmo's biggest square, on Sunday afternoon. He has already desecrated the Quran in a series of anti-Islam protests leading to landing Sweden in diplomatic unrest with a number of Muslim countries.

Malmo police area commander Petra Stenkula told local media: "I understand that a public gathering like this arouses strong emotions, but we cannot tolerate disturbances and violence like the ones we saw on Sunday afternoon,".

Later in June, on the first day of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important festivals in the Muslim calendar, Momika set fire to a copy of the Quran outside Stockholm's central mosque after Swedish police had given him the permit for the protest, in accordance with their staunch free-speech laws.

Sweden has vowed to investigate legislative options for banning protests that entail the burning of holy books in certain scenarios.

Rasmus Paludan, a member of Denmark's far-right Stram Kurs (Hard Line) party, burned a copy of the Quran outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm in January.

Denmark, which also witnessed multiple public burnings of the Quran, said last month that it will ban public desecration of holy books.
