Daesh released 22 Assyrian Christians that have been held hostage since their abduction almost six months ago, reports AFP.

According to the activist group Assyrian Observatory for Human Rights, 14 of the released hostages were women.

The release was "the result of the tireless efforts and negotiations by the Assyrian Church of the East in the city of Hassakeh," the group told AFP.

More than 200 Assyrian Christians were abducted from villages near Hassakeh in February 2015.

The Assyrian Observatory for Human Rights is currently negotiating for the release of 187 remaining hostages.
