Monitoring group Human Rights Watch urged the UN to impose an arms embargo on the Syrian government Thursday to "stop indiscriminate attacks" against civilians, AFP reported.
The call follows Sunday's attacks near Damascus on the rebel-held town of Douma, where several regime airstrikes targeted a marketplace and killed more than 100 people.
"This latest carnage is another reminder — if any was still needed — of the urgent need for the Security Council to act on its previous resolutions and take steps to stop indiscriminate attacks," HRW Deputy Middle East Director Nadim Houry said.
The New York-based monitor said the Syrian government has shown an "appalling disregard for civilians" in the massacre that killed 112 people, according to local officials interviewed by the group.
HRW said the UN has failed to implement resolutions that would protect civilian lives and stop its "indiscriminate use of weapons" in crowded places, according to the AFP.
Douma in rebel-held Eastern Ghouta has been a common target for government attacks, but the air raids were one of the deadliest regime assaults since the civil war began in 2011.
