A group of armed men have attacked a Lebanese army post in the northern city of Tripoli, killing one soldier.

The Lebanese army issued a statement on Tuesday saying two soldiers were also injured during clashes that erupted between the armed men and Lebanese troops in the Badawi neighborhood of the city.

The dead soldier was identified as Mohammed Hussein.

Over the past months, Lebanon’s second largest city, Tripoli, has been rocked by turmoil due to the conflict between supporters and opponents of the government of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad.

The conflict in Syria has pitted pro-Assad residents of Tripoli’s Jabal Mohsen neighborhood against people of Bab al-Tabbaneh who support foreign-backed militants operating against the government in Syria.

Lebanon has also witnessed terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda-linked militants.

Rockets fired by militants from inside the Syrian territory have also landed in parts of Lebanon near its border with Syria.

Militants in Syria have frequently attacked Lebanon’s border areas where the majority of people support the Syrian government.

The al-Nusra Front militant group and the Islamic State terrorists have been operating against the Lebanese army near the town of Arsal on the Syrian border. Lebanon has sent reinforcements to the area.

The militants launched a cross-border incursion into Arsal in early August. Lebanese troops entered the town following five days of fierce clashes with the IS militants.

Last month, the militants took dozens of Lebanese soldiers and policemen hostage after heavy battles with the army. The terrorists have executed a number of those hostages.
