Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Wilton Gregory to the College of Cardinals in Vatican City making him the first Black American to hold the rank of cardinal in the US, on Saturday November 28th.
Thirteen men were also named as new cardinals at the induction, called a consistory. Due to Covid-19, the ceremony was under special health requirements, including quarantines for the men, who are all in the at-risk age for complications from the virus.
Nevertheless, two of the appointees, Cornelius Sim of Brunei and Jose Fuerte Advincula of the Philippines, participated via a special live stream because of the coronavirus pandemic travel restrictions.
